We want to give a warm welcome to Douglas Watkins, our new Maître D’/Sommelier at Kimball’s Kitchen. Douglas comes from a long line of restaurant experience, beginning when he was just 14 years old as a bus boy and prep cook. Throughout his years of experience, he has worked his way up to Executive Chef at the North Captiva Island Resort in Captiva, Florida and his latest position as the Wine Director of Sonoma Wine Bar & Bistro in Virginia Beach. He is a level 2 Sommelier, currently working his way towards level 3.
Douglas grew up working in and around the White House, as he was born and raised in Arlington, VA. He spent the first 15 years of his career working in the back of the house. He took a haitus from the back of house when he began to put himself through school beginning at George Mason, and finishing at Old Dominion University where he majored in Geology. The itch for the restaurant was back upon finishing school though, where he began working in the front of house making his way up to his latest position at Kimball’s.
He says he loves the Front of House because of the interaction with guests every single day. There is never a dull moment while interacting with everyone coming to enjoy good food and good wine! His latest project is working on creating a socialistic liquor list for guests to have the opportunity to try liquors they may not usually be able to get their hands on. One example of this is our newest bourbon tastings with over 22 different bourbons offered at Kimball’s. He will also be working on revamping the Kimball’s Kitchen wine list to create a menu to best represent every major wine region in the world.
Douglas’s favorite collection of wines are Terrior wines, which entails a combination of climate, soil, tradition, and terrain and how they affect the taste of the wine. Burgundy, Northern Rhone Valley, and Piedmont are among his favorite wine regions. If asked for his opinion on a dinner option, his favorite item on the menu is the Tomahawk ribeye, paired with a Barolo wine. He describes them as a match made in heaven!
Be sure to make reservations for Kimball’s Kitchen before it closes for the season! Open at 5pm; Tuesday-Saturday until October 22nd.
