Although the summer is sadly coming to a close, we still have a few more weeks to soak up all the summer fun the Outer Banks has to offer! If you didn’t know already, right here in our backyard is a great place for fishing, fairs, and all things fun! The Outer Banks also holds annual events that are sure to bring families back time and time again. It is a great way to gather as a community, learn some new skills, and appreciate what our town has to offer and what makes us such a unique place.

Town of Manteo’s 5th Annual Kids Fishing Tournament

August 11th

This family fun event is absolutely free! Just bring your own rod and reel, and the bait will be provided for you. This tournament is open to youth ages 4-17 of all skill levels! And it’s the perfect opportunity to teach the kiddos even if it’s their first time. Registration begins at 8 am and the fishing begins at 8:15 at the Roanoke Island Maritime Museum in downtown Manteo, 104 Fernando St. There’s also plenty to do while you’re downtown like visiting Kitty Hawk Kites, grabbing some ice cream, or visiting the Christmas Shop! OBX Pirate Festival

August 15th – 16th


Ahoy Mateys!

For these two days, Blackbeard and his crew will be docked at Jockey’s Ridge Crossing where the history of the OBX pirates will be shared. Kids can participate in Scallywag school (advanced registration is recommended) to find out if they have all the skills to become a part of the pirate crew! Photo ops are available with local mermaids, pirate activities throughout the day, musket demonstrations, and even a daily cannon fire demonstration. The event is free for young and old visitors alike and is located at Kitty Hawk Kites in Nags Head. Come join the swashbuckling fun at the Outer Banks Pirate Festival and make it a salty memory that could last a lifetime!

Virginia Dare Faire

August 18th


The Lost Colony and the National Park Service are teaming up for a special event to celebrate the birthday of Virginia Dare – one of the most famous Outer Banks residents. Did you know Virginia was the first English child born in the “New World”? Well at this family fun faire, you will learn all about culture and local history without even realizing you’re getting a short history lesson! The kids can enjoy crafts, games, face painting, and more at the The Lost Colony building in Manteo from 10am-1pm. This all day event will get the family involved in learning about the Lost Colony mystery and celebrate the history of Roanoke Island. You can find more information about this event here.

4th Annual Surf + Sounds Chamber Music Series

August 21st – 24th


This is your chance to hear live music from five acclaimed musicians from around the country. It is a free event for the public and is taking place all week at various locations in Duck. Chamber music will be performed by a piano quintet or string quintet depending on the night. Bring out the entire family to hear the great music and enjoy a night out in Duck! Wave Riding Vehicle (WRV) OBX Pro Surf Contest

August 29th – September 3rd


Time to shred some waves!

Jeanette’s Pier is hosting the WRV surf contest on Labor Day weekend. This is a great event for surfers and spectators alike. The contest draws top competitors to the unique coastline of the Outer Banks from all over the world. Enjoy the sand in your toes while watching the competitors best tricks. Last years waves were amazing and we expect no less this year. Enjoy one of the last summer weekends in the sun! Labor Day 5K / 1 Mile

September 3rd


If being outdoors and running is your thing, we have an event for you! Beginning at the War Memorial at the Kill Devil Hills Town Mall, there will be a 5K / 1 Mile race beginning at 8am on Labor Day. Registration is already underway for this race but it is not too late! Enjoy the sunshine, the great weather, and running with friends or family in the Outer Banks!
